Denim Skirt

Another skirt... o_O

I've really no idea why I make so many skirts and dresses when I wear jeans or shorts most of the time. Maybe because they are so much easier to fit than trousers. Anyway, here is another skirt, I really like the style, and the side pickets. <3

The pattern for this one is from Suuri Käsityö 10/2010, 12 "Laskoshame". I drew the patterns couple of months ago, but didn't start actually doing anything until now. Main problem with finding the right fabric was figuring out what does "ryhdikäs" mean when speaking of a fabric. I concluded it means a fabric that doesn't wrinkle much.

The fabric I bought is some sort of stretch denim, light blue on the right side, light grey on the back side and with a worn out look. As usual it is from Eurokangas, as there aren't any other fabric stores around that I know of. I also needed some rivets, two buckles, two jeans buttons and a 12cm zipper. All of them I bought from Merletto. The zipper matches the fabric pretty well and all the metal parts are steel colored with some small stars in the buttons. :) Rivets, buttons etc Buttons Buckles

Cutting and sewing and whatnot

This thing really has a lot of pieces. Pattern has 6 pieces, 13 when cut plus another 8 that are rectangles of different sizes. For once I actually read the instructions before starting. x) All pieces cut

I am not sure if the makers of this pattern thought it through with the smaller sizes. The zipper is supposed to be stitched like in jeans, but the fabric from the fold is kinda in the way. Trying to decide if I should sew it with the stitch or not. fold zipper

Stitched the fold with the rest, doesn't look bad, doesn't feel bad (when trying the skirt on), so probably fine like that.

At least one mistake made: I cut only one backside piece, when I should have cut two which would have been sewn together. Cosmetic mostly, so I sew a fake seam there, but skipped the stitches on top. Instead I sew extra stitches on the upper back yokes(?) ("kaarroke"). Instructions didn't mention stitch there, but all the jeans I own have it and imo it looks better that way. Fake seam at the back of the skirt

The model in the magazine's picture is probably around 170cm and the skirt doesn't quite reach her knees. Since I am much shorter, mine would have reached well past my knees. So I shortened the thing by about 8cm and now it comes right to my knees. :)

The rivets were a pain in the ass. Again the thingie that you are supposed to make a hole with, did not work at all. So I used a very large sewing needle plus my trusty Victorinox instead. Even then it wasn't easy, because of all the layers of fabric, since the places where the rivets go are the once with most folds: the upper corners of pockets and the bottom ends of the belt hooks, 12 rivets in total. Instructions said I needed 16, so I forgot 4 from somewhere, apparently from the pockets. Might add them later. Or not. :) Pocket rivet

As much trouble as the rivets were, they weren't even the worst by far. My nemesis, the button holes strike again! I first did a test hole on an extra piece of the denim. No problems what so ever. The first one on the actual skirt also went fine on the first go. But the second... I think I redid it 6 times before I got it right... Still not perfect but good enough.
